The headlines today are full of stories about the H1N1 virus.  Here in New York , school children have started to receive their vaccines this week at school.  I’m sure it’s hitting close to home for those of you who are somewhere on the journey to family as well.  Well the topic of H1N1 was also addressed at the ASRM conference last week. Here is what we learned:

The ASRM (American Society of Reproductive Medicine) and the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) issued a joint statement on the H1N1 influenza virus saying that all fertility clinics should encourage their patients who are planning pregnancy to be vaccinated for both seasonal influenza and H1N1. They stress the importance of vaccination because pregnant women with 2009 H1N1 influenza have higher rates of hospitalization and death than the general population.

For more information, here are a couple resources for you:

CDC - “Pregnancy and 2009 H1N1 Flu: Protect Yourself, Protect Your Baby”

Flu.gov - “Pregnant Women & the Flu- 5 things you should know”

And we all know the most important preventive measure- Wash Your Hands. Stay well this season.
