Terminology Tuesdays is something I hope to bring you every week here on the Fertility Focus blog.  There is so much that can be overwhelming about your journey through fertility – confusing terminology certainly doesn’t have to be one of those things.

Since this blog is new, I thought I would start off with of the some basic terminology you might hear when researching fertility- In vitro fertilization. In vitro fertilization, or IVF as it is often referred to, is the joining of egg and sperm outside the body-usually in a laboratory dish. The fertilized egg(s) is then transferred to the woman’s uterus in hopes of establishing a successful pregnancy.  IVF has been successfully used since 1978.

If you are thinking about IVF treatment or are already in treatment, there are two wonderful patient advocacy groups, Resolve and the American Fertility Association (the AFA). Both websites are full of information about IVF that may be helpful to you.
