As mentioned last week, each Tuesday I will define terminology used in the fertility field. Today’s terminology is Assisted Reproductive Technology or “ART.”
ART encompasses all techniques involving the manipulation of eggs, sperm or embryos. The most common ART treatment is IVF (In Vitro Fertilization). In fact, according to the last published SART (Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology) data in 2007, there were 132,745 ART cycles performed in the United States.
ASRM (American Society for Reproductive Medicine) has created a 24 page guide (available for download here) for patients all about Assisted Reproductive Technologies. I recommend this guide for patients seeking clarity on the accepted medical treatments for infertility.
