Terminology Tuesday – IntraCytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)

ICSI is an acronym for IntraCytoplasmic Sperm Injection and is a procedure in which a single sperm is injected into an egg. If fertilization occurs after ICSI, the embryo may then be transferred into the uterus.  The ICSI procedure was developed in 1993 and is used primarily as a remedy for male infertility.  IVF Florida is a practice within the IntegraMed network and their website does a great job explaining the semen analysis.  The semen analysis is used to diagnosis male infertility.

According to the last published Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology (SART) data, ICSI was performed in 63% of all the Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) cycles completed in the United States.
