Ovulation Induction (OI) is a procedure that uses medication to increase the number of eggs ovulated per cycle, which may improve the chances of pregnancy. Ovulation can be stimulated by one of several medication regimens. Patients taking these medications will be monitored via blood tests and ultrasound. The blood tests and ultrasound monitoring will determine the patient’s response to the treatment.
Often, the first medication option used in OI is Clomiphene Citrate. This medication is given in pill form and is generally prescribed for five days and taken during the early part of the menstrual cycle.
Fertility medications known as injectable gonadotropins are also prescribed in OI. Patients administer these medications via a daily subcutaneous injection starting on the second or third day of their menstrual cycle. These injections continue until the physician determines from monitoring sessions that the eggs are mature and ready to ovulate. Common injectable medications used for OI to increase and stimulate growth of the eggs are Gonal F™, Follistim™, Bravelle™, Repronex™ and/or Menopur™. To prevent a premature surge in the hormone LH, patients are also prescribed a GnRH agonist (Lupron™, Synarel™) or GnRH antagonist (Ganirelix™, Cetrotide™). These medications are given also by subcutaneous injection.
