Women aren’t waiting to seek infertility help

I thought I’d share an interesting HealthDay News article I recently saw: a whopping 88% of women are actively seeking medical advice for fertility before they’re 35 years old.

This finding is part of a study conducted by HealthyWomen, the nation’s leading independent health information source for women. According to the study, the majority of women are also aware of many risk factors that can impact their chance of having a baby, including:

  • Medical conditions that affect the reproductive system
  • Age
  • Complications from sexually transmitted diseases
  • Ovulation problems

“Many factors and conditions can affect a woman’s ability to conceive naturally. Some of these include being overweight or underweight, and chronic health conditions such as diabetes and thyroid disorders, substance abuse, alcohol consumption and some medications,” said Elizabeth Battaglino Cahill, executive director of HealthyWomen. “It is important that a woman work closely with her health care provider to determine the best plan for maintaining optimal health while trying to conceive a child while also assessing her partner’s health and possible fertility issues.”

I couldn’t agree with her more. Your medical team is an integral part of your support system when planning for pregnancy – and the sooner you seek their help, the better.

As we all look forward to the New Year and wonder what’s in store for us, I hope you are able to forge a productive relationship with your healthcare provider and that 2010 is filled with abundance for you and your loved ones.
