Terminology Tuesday-Body Mass Index (BMI)

Happy New Year to all of you! I hope you’ve weathered the holidays and are charged up for the year ahead. I know I am. And for those of you who are planning and hoping for parenthood, I’m excited to be with you along your journey in 2010.

Yesterday, we asked our Facebook community to post their thoughts about the connection between body mass index (BMI) and fertility. And wow – did they respond! (Thank you.) Last I checked, over 50 fans commented.

Most of our fans believe there’s a connection between a healthy body weight and fertility success, but it isn’t a guarantee for success.

I think your BMI has alot to do with fertility. My doctor told me if I lose even 20 lbs of my weight my periods would probably become regular again. Ovulation will happened every month like it’s suppose to. But being heavy with PCOS my odds of becoming pregnant without some medication is zero to one.

My BMI is normal (24) and I can’t get pregnant. I’m also only 26 as of yesterday and since 2004 have had one pregnancy via our third IVF (after many IUI’s, medIUI’s, etc). Since then a FET and several medicated cycles and many natural cycles have struck out. BMI is still the same.

According to the National Heart, Blood and Lung (NHBL), “BMI is a measure of your weight relative to your height and weight.”

BMI
Underweight Below 18.5
Normal 18.5 – 24.9
Overweight 25.0 – 29.9
Obesity 30.0 and Above

Last November, I posted the finding of a study which concluded that among obese women, the chance of pregnancy and live birth decreased significantly with increasing BMI.

So what does this have to do with Terminology Tuesday, you ask? I know that I usually talk about more technical fertility-related topics, but with the beginning of the New Year (and all those resolutions to lose weight) it’s the perfect opportunity to define BMI again and its relationship to increasing the chance of fertility success.

The great news is that obesity is reversible. Healthy eating and exercise is something we can all participate in at any time. I, for one, am dedicating myself to making healthy choices in 2010. What healthy choices are you making this year?
