Unexplained Infertility is also known as idiopathic infertility; if standard fertility testing has not been able to reveal a cause or reason for the failure to conceive a couple may be given the diagnosis of unexplained infertility. This diagnosis can be very frustrating for a couple since the testing they went through still cannot provide them with any answers. Approximately 20% of couples will be given this diagnosis despite completing a full infertility workup.
The diagnosis of unexplained infertility does not mean that your infertility cannot be treated. One approach is that the couple may continue attempting natural conception if the age of the female is appropriate. In many cases, medical treatment may be similar to treatment for infertility that has a known cause. If you think you are experiencing infertility, especially of you are under the age of 35 and have been trying to conceive for greater than a year or over the age of 35 and trying to conceive for greater than 6 months you may want to seek medical consultation. The age of the woman and the duration of the couple’s infertility may influence the success of the treatment.
