I only run when chased.

Seriously. I used to run all the time, for fun and to stay in shape. But I also started swimming competitively when I was 9. After 10 years of that, I was hooked. I’d rather swim than run any day. Heck, I’d rather swim than walk!

Swimming laps is always meditative for me. There’s something about the steady rhythm of strokes, kicks and breaths that never fails to focus and clear my mind.  Running, on the other hand, seems to make my head more chaotic.  I start thinking about everything I need to do instead of living in the moment.  Plus, I hate to sweat.  Combine that with a nasty case of shin splints my sophomore year in college and I now only run when chased.

So swimming it is for me. Except that in the chaos of life, I stopped suiting up on a regular basis. I haven’t had a truly regular exercise plan since I finished law school 10 years ago and headed out into the rat race.  Coincidentally, that’s when I started to put on weight…. Hmmmmm…..

The weight loss was a bit harder this week, so I think it’s time for me to get back in the pool. My One Thing for the week (and hopefully many weeks) will be exercise. I have friends who’ve vowed to do a Couch to 5K plan this year, but I’m going to do 0 to 1650, yards in the pool that is. I’ve got a nice plan to be swimming a mile in six weeks and I have to admit that I can’t wait to start!

Weight loss for the week: 1.6 lbs
Total weight loss: 7 lbs

How did you do this week? What One Thing did you do to make your life healthier?
