By now, many people may have told you to relax, that’s all it will take to become pregnant. Is it really that simple? Unfortunately, it is not.

The exact role of stress and fertility remains uncertain at best. In reviewing the Medical Literature, there is no consensus of the effects of stress on fertility. Equally lacking is evidence that stress reduction will improve pregnancy rates. A recent article in the British Medical Journal (BMJ 2011;342:d223) concluded “ the findings of this meta-analysis should reassure women and doctors that emotional distress caused by infertility or other life events co-occurring with treatment will not compromise the chance of becoming pregnant.”

When you are trying to get pregnant, it is impossible not to feel some stress. Infertility may place a heavy burden upon one’s self-esteem and may lead to a negative self-image Sexual intimacy is often replaced by scheduled sex.

The diagnostic tests, visits to the Doctor’s office and treatments can all add to the stress already present. The cost of treatment and Insurance coverage (or lack of) add to the stress of treatment. The medications may affect mood and alter one’s sense of well-being. Stress may also arise from the uncertainty of the future – will this month be the one, what should I do next?

While no one answer works for each person, listed below are stress management methods that may help manage your stress and increase a sense of balance in your life.
