The American Society of Reproductive Medicine sent this bulletin to its membership. I wanted to share this with you so that you may be able to contact your senator and urge him or her to support this important legislation!

One in eight women struggle with infertility. The costs for infertility treatment can be a significant financial burden. The Family Act of 2011 (S. 965), recently introduced by Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) would help the millions of people diagnosed with infertility overcome these financial burdens of family building.

The ASRM bulletin states, “Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) [recently] introduced legislation to provide eligible taxpayers a tax credit of 50 percent of qualified infertility treatment expenses incurred during the taxable year. The FAMILY Act would apply to expenses related to in vitro fertilization and treatments to preserve fertility in advance of medical procedures which may impact fertility and would have a lifetime cap of $13,360. The tax credit is modeled after an existing tax credit available to taxpayers who incur adoption expenses.”

ASRM endorses this measure and has encouraged its members to call their two Senators in Washington to urge that they co-sponsor this legislation. I encourage everyone who has struggled with infertility or knows someone who has been touched by infertility to pick up the phone and call their senators and express their support for The Family Act of 2011. I just called and asked for my senators’ support! Please pick up the phone right now and call your senators and ask for them to back The Family Act of 2011!

You can find contact information for your Senators at http://www.senate.gov/ or connect via the US Capitol switchboard at 202-225-3121. Call right now!

You can get more information about the legislation from Karina Cabrera in Senator Gillibrand’s office.
