The Making of Baby 3.2: The Sperm Analysis Results

To update everyone, we got the results of my husband’s sperm analysis last week. His count is excellent. The motility and volume were also good. His morphology, however, was low at 0.5%.

On Friday I had my ultrasound to see how the Clomid worked this cycle. I had one nice follicle of 20mm, so we triggered on Friday night with Ovidrel. At my ultrasound, we had a nice discussion with our doctor about whether to use timed intercourse or IUI this cycle.  At our last visit, we decided that we would let Trey’s semen analysis results determine whether we used timed intercourse or IUI this cycle. But since T has managed to get me pregnant several times in the last 6 months, we didn’t think it would be much of an issue.

Well…. it is and it isn’t.  Our doctor didn’t think that IUI would increase our chances much.  If Trey’s low morphology is really an issue, she said IVF with ICSI is probably the only help.  But, again, since Trey has managed to knock me up, she’s not really worried about his low morphology.  She gave us about a 12% chance of getting pregnant with timed intercourse this cycle and maybe 13% with IUI. So we went with timed intercourse for this cycle.

I started my progesterone tonight, so we are officially in the Two Week Wait!

I’m going to need everyone to distract me during the TWW, particularly since I can’t indulge my home pregnancy test addiction!  Because my trigger shot contained HCG, the hormone detected by pregnancy tests, I will get a false positive if I test too early. (Not that ‘d ever do that. Nooooo, not me!)  So distract me!  Have you had to choose between IUI and timed intercourse? What was your deciding factor?

My story sounds eerily similar to yours. We got pregnant twice in a year and miscarried both. My recurrent mc workup was all clear so we went back to TTC. 6 months of BFNs later (I’m over 35), DH did an SA and that’s when we learned he has sky-high count, good to great motility (depending on the day), and 1% morphology. We’re trying IUI with injectables because we have insurance coverage for it. Like yours, our RE isn’t overly concerned (despite my panic!) about the morphology since we’ve gotten pregnant twice already. He’s quite hopeful that IUI will work for us and we won’t need to move on to IVF with ICSI… I just wish I could be as hopeful as he is….

  2. Melissa – Wow! That does sound familiar. Good luck to you with the IUI. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you. I know just how hard it is to be hopeful for yourself.
